What is an LLM? A Simple Guide for Students and Beginners
You’ve probably used ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. You type a question, and it replies almost like a person. But what is actually running behind that chat box? The answer is an LLM, short for large language model. If you’re planning a career in software or AI, understanding LLMs is quickly becoming a core skill.
What is an LLM?
An LLM is an AI system trained on vast amounts of text to understand and generate human language. It can answer questions, write emails, summarise documents, translate languages, and write code.
- Large: Trained on enormous datasets, with billions of internal settings called parameters.
- Language: Works with human languages like English, Tamil, and Hindi, and also programming languages.
- Model: A mathematical system that has learned patterns from data.
How Does an LLM Work?
Think of the autocomplete on your phone keyboard. Type “Good” and it suggests “morning”. An LLM does the same thing at a far bigger scale.
- Training: The model reads massive amounts of text from books, websites, and code.
- Learning patterns: It learns how words and ideas relate to each other.
- Predicting the next token: When you ask something, it predicts the most likely next piece of text, again and again, until the answer is complete.
It doesn’t look answers up in a database. It generates them from learned patterns.
Tokens and the Transformer
LLMs read text in small chunks called tokens (a word, part of a word, or a character). Almost all modern LLMs are built on the Transformer architecture, introduced in 2017. Its key idea is attention, which helps the model work out which words in a sentence relate to each other.
What Can LLMs Do?
- Write content, emails, and reports.
- Explain difficult topics in simple language.
- Write, review, and debug code.
- Summarise long documents
- Translate between languages
- Power chatbots, search tools, and AI assistants

Limitations to Know
- Hallucinations: They can state wrong information confidently.
- Knowledge cutoff: They only know what they were trained on, unless connected to search or other tools.
- Bias: They can reflect biases in their training data.
- No true understanding: They are excellent at patterns, but they don’t think like humans.
These limits are exactly why techniques like RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) exist. RAG connects an LLM to your own documents and data so its answers are more accurate and up to date.
LLM vs Generative AI vs Agentic AI
- Generative AI is the broad category of AI that creates content. (New to this? Read our guide: Generative AI Explained: A Simple Guide for Students in 2026)
- LLM is the model type that generates text and powers most Gen AI tools.
- Agentic AI uses an LLM as its brain and adds tools, memory, and planning so it can complete multi-step tasks on its own.
Why LLM Skills Matter for Your Career
Companies are building products on top of LLMs: chatbots, document search, coding assistants, and automation tools. That means demand for people who can actually build with them, not just use them. Skills worth learning:
- Python programming
- Prompt engineering and evaluation
- Working with LLM APIs (such as the OpenAI API)
- Building RAG pipelines with vector databases
- Building AI agents that use tools
You don’t need a PhD to start. You need strong fundamentals, hands-on practice, and mentors who review your work.
Learn LLMs Hands-On at RootAxis, Coimbatore
Reading about AI is a good start, but the real skill comes from building. At RootAxis Technologies, our programs focus on practical, project-based learning with small cohorts and mentor code reviews.
Programs to explore:
- Generative AI Masterclass (12 weeks): LLMs, RAG architecture, vector databases, and prompt engineering using tools like LangChain, LlamaIndex, OpenAI API, Pinecone, and ChromaDB.
- Agentic AI & Multi-Agent Systems (12 weeks): Build tool-using and multi-agent systems with LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- Full Stack Developer with AI (16 weeks): Build with React, Node.js, Python, and Django, using AI coding assistants in your daily workflow.

Final Thoughts
An LLM is a powerful pattern predictor that has read more text than any person could in a lifetime. It’s not magic, and it’s not perfect, but people who understand how it works and can build with it will have a real advantage. The best way to learn is to build something, so start today.
